You might have seen the terms ‘hemp oil’ and ‘CBD oil’ used interchangeably. Especially now that the popularity of CBD has skyrocketed in the last few years. If you’re interested in trying CBD oil, you should be aware that these are two different things. But what is the difference, you might ask? Don’t worry, we’re going to break it down for you.
CBD is definitely having its moment. From CBD oils to tinctures to CBD gummies, CBD products seem to be popping up everywhere.
But it also seems like, with more and more products out there, there’s also a ton more misinformation about CBD. This can make the world of CBD a little tricky to navigate, especially for newcomers.
One thing that might be confusing for a lot of people is where CBD actually comes from. This is why CBD oil may often get mixed up with hemp oil and hemp seed oil.
Another factor that complicates matters is that some people use the phrase ‘hemp oil’ as an umbrella term for both CBD oil and hemp seed oil. Some might also use the phrase ‘hemp oil’ when referring only to CBD oil, while others (to make matters even more confusing) use ‘hemp oil’ to talk about hemp seed oil. But it's important to note that there is a difference between hemp seed oil and CBD oil.
To clear things up a little, we’re going to be talking about the difference between CBD oil and hemp seed oil. When we talk about hemp oil, we are referring to hemp seed oil rather than CBD oil or tincture.
Let’s first take a look at CBD oil.
Hemp Oil vs. CBD Oil: What's the Difference?
What is CBD oil?
CBD oil is one of the most popular types of CBD products out there. The main ingredient in CBD oil is, you guessed it, CBD, or cannabidiol.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive chemical compound derived from the cannabis Sativa plant. It is one type of cannabinoid. Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds that are found in the cannabis plant. These compounds interact with the endocannabinoid system. Researchers describe the endocannabinoid system as a biological system that helps with regulating a lot of the key processes in the human body.
CBD differs from THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the psychoactive compound also found in the cannabis plant. This is the compound that produces the “high” sensation people associate with cannabis.
In CBD products such as CBD oils, the THC has been removed so the resulting product is not psychoactive. CBD products contain either zero or no more than 0.3% THC. The type of cannabis Sativa plant that contains THC is also commonly known as marijuana.
Marijuana and hemp are two different varieties of the cannabis Sativa plant species.
Where does CBD come from?
CBD can be sourced from either marijuana or hemp. The majority of CBD oils and products extract their CBD from industrial hemp.
The CBD can be extracted from the hemp plant in a variety of ways, for example through ethanol or CO2 extraction. CBD extraction uses more parts of the hemp plant such as the leaves and flowers.
CBD oil generally consists of some form of CBD, like broad-spectrum CBD, which is diffused with a carrier oil. The reason it’s mixed with a carrier oil is to deliver the CBD in a form that is more easily consumed and absorbed. One of the most popular options for carrier oils is MCT oil, a high-quality coconut-based oil. Hemp seed oil may sometimes also be used as a carrier oil in CBD oil.
What is CBD oil used for?
People use CBD oil for a number of different reasons, depending on their individual wellness needs. Some find that it helps encourage a feeling of calm. Discovering ways to calm down and unwind, whether it’s through meditation or breathing, for example, is super important for our mental and physical wellbeing. Finding the right strategy for relaxation can help some people cope with feelings of stress and encourage better sleep.
This is only one example of what CBD oil is used for. Through a daily regimen, many people can quickly discover the benefits of CBD that meet their personal wellness goals.
How do people use CBD oil?
People usually take CBD oil by placing a few drops under the tongue or directly into the mouth. This method helps for the CBD to be absorbed into the bloodstream without any additional processes, like digestion.
There are also other types of CBD products in addition to CBD oil. It is also available in capsules and tinctures. If you’d like to learn more about different types of CBD products, check out our post on how to choose the right CBD product.
So, what is hemp seed oil?
Hemp seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant and is only sourced from the hemp plant. The oil is usually extracted by cold-pressing hemp seeds to produce a dark, thick oil.
Hemp seed oil generally does not contain cannabidiol or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It’s possible that it may have trace amounts of these compounds, but the amount is so small that hemp seed oil does not produce the effects of either CBD or THC.
What are hemp seeds?
This is probably pretty self-explanatory, but hemp seeds are the seeds of the hemp plant (cannabis Sativa).
These seeds are typically used as a dietary supplement because they have a fantastic nutritional profile. Although they’re called seeds, hemp seeds are technically a type of nut. In fact, they have a mild, nutty flavor.
There are several health benefits of hemp seeds, sometimes called hemp hearts. For instance, they are high in healthy fats and protein. They contain both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Omega fatty acids are connected to a number of health benefits, including skin, heart, and immune health (1, 2, 3).
You may already be familiar with hemp seeds if you follow a vegan or plant-based diet. This is because hemp seeds are a great source of plant-based protein. There’s about 11g of protein in 30g (2-3 tablespoons) of hemp seeds. No wonder they’re a great addition to raw bars and energy balls!
Additionally, hemp hearts contain plenty of fiber as well as vitamin E and minerals including potassium and calcium.
What is hemp seed oil used for?
Hemp seed oil is used in a variety of different ways. It can be consumed as a dietary supplement or used topically. In fact, it’s often added to cosmetics like moisturizers or facial oils thanks to its nourishing properties.
People might consume hemp seed oil to reap the same benefits they may get from adding hemp seeds or hemp hearts to their diet. Some might even refer to hemp seed oil as a “superfood” because of its nutritional value. It can be used in a whole host of different ways. For example, it works as a base for salad dressings or can be added to smoothies.
Hemp seed oil is also a powerful moisturizer that some scientists claim is especially well-suited for oily or acne-prone skin.
How do I tell the difference between CBD oil and hemp oil?
Look out for the ingredients listed on the product label. Quality CBD brands always state if their product contains CBD, what type of CBD has been used, and how much CBD is in their CBD oil. This is why you should always purchase your CBD oil, or other CBD products, from reputable, trustworthy CBD brands.
It’s also advisable to only purchase CBD oils, tinctures, capsules, or creams from companies whose products have been third-party lab-tested. This helps to ensure that the CBD product is of high quality and contains no more than 0.3% THC.
